Manual Wheelchairs

Manual or self-propelled wheelchairs are propelled by pushing on the handrims and generally work well for people with good upper body control. There are three types of manual wheelchairs: lightweight, ultra lightweight and standard. Advanced Seating and Mobility carries a full line of manual wheelchairs and will customize each chair based on the individual's weight, seat to floor height, width, depth and positioning needs.

Light weight wheelchairs are typically between 25-30 pounds and made of tubular steel or aluminum with a nylon back. An ‘X shaped cross brace under the chair allows the wheelchair to be folded sideways for storage in a vehicle or storage compartment.

Ultra light weight wheelchairs are made from aluminum or titanium and under 25 pounds. With their rigid frame, they can't be folded but provide a very efficient transfer of energy when the user pushes on the hand rims. In addition, they have a tight turning radius making them easier to maneuver in an office cubicle or bathroom. The center of gravity can be adjusted in fine increments and joints are welded giving them exceptional stability and performance.

Standard wheelchairs are usually propelled with push handles and weigh over 30 pounds. They can also be propelled with the hand rims or with the user's feet. The backrest angle (recline) can often be adjusted to accommodate the user's positioning needs. These chairs are also used for transporting people from one location to another and can be fitted with an oxygen tank holder.
